Desktop virtualization
Moving desktops to the cloud is not a new idea. Thin client technologies have been around for a while. Current virtualization and cloud revolution allowed them to mature and with help of server virtualization and state of the art thin clients, we are now able to virtualize the desktop experience.
Advantages of desktop virtualization are:
- Simplified management. The thin client does not hold any information. Backups, administration, upgrading are all done on the server side. Problem with the thin client device are solved by replacing the unit, with no need of reinstalling the operating system or applications.
- Security. Data is safe in the data center, with proper physical access control. Security policies are applied centrally across the enterprise.
- Reduced costs. Thin clients last longer (upgrading and scaling of desktop solution occurs on the server side). No need to replace computers every two to three years, they can be in production for five or more years. Additionally, thin clients consume much less energy compared to traditional computing.
- Scale on demand. New servers are aquired based on current needs. Additionally, servers can be utilized when they are needed, they can be turned off in off-peak hours. Server side desktop migration can make this transparent to users.
- Remote desktop access. Users can access their desktops from wherever they are using a web browser or a different thin client in corporate network. Changing offices? Working in different cities? In hotel? Use the same desktop wherever you are.
- VoIP and printer mobility. When you are in corporate building, use the nearby printers, receive calls on nearby phones.
- Real desktop experience. Play videos from Youtube. Listen to music. Use your USB devices. This is true desktop experience, that allows you to do whatever you need to do. Everything is subject to server side access control of course.
